What type of valve / valve keeper does your Kaw have?

All Kawasaki 900 models from 1973 thru 1977 used a valve that has a rectangular or "square cut" valve keeper groove on the top of the stem, as in the view ath the left of this picture....

All Kawasaki 1000 models 1977 and later used a valve that has a semi-circular or "round groove" cutout for the keepers, as in the view on the right.....

However, these valves are interchangeable between 900 and 1000 engines as long as the proper keepers are used with their respective valves......

Due to this interchangeability, many old Kaw heads have valve types interchanged, and often the wrong keepers are applied to certain valves by mechanics not familiar with these differences.....

Worse yet, in a situation where a head has been assembled with mis-matched valve and keepers, the engine will run fine.....
For a while ......   But not for long........

The piston at right was removed as you see it from a 1978 Z1-R 1000 that had been nicely restored..... but that one serious mistake was made .......All of the exhaust valves had been installed using the wrong keepers ..... It ran fine until......Luckily, nobody got killed while riding this one....

No, this was not one of our mistakes ..... Not that we don't make them....

Should you use stainless steel valves in your Kaw?

Stainless valves have many characteristics that make them superior to other valves..... They have their greatest benefit in racing applications where engines are subjected to greater stress and heat ........

But given their expense, and conditions encountered on the street, they have no real advantage.......Even in engines with cams and bore kits......

If you have been led to believe that stainless valves are more resitant to bending on a missed shift, the valve at left will
prove otherwise......
