Tech - Camchain Damper Mods / Using a 1-Piece Head Gasket

A simple modification can make your engine more oil-tight when using a 1 piece head gasket....

In the picture above left, an OEM camchain roller damper is shown as it is positioned in a stock application..... The damper
stands above the cylinder surface.... When using the original 2-piece head gasket & o-ring shown top right, this provides
proper contact with the bottom of the head when it is installed..... However, when a 1-piece head gasket is used,
and the o-ring is eliminated, the head gasket sits on top of the damper..... This often prevents the head from sitting down
firmly on the cylinder top, and can cause oil leaks at the front & rear of the head / cylinder contact area.....

The solution is simple, and can be accomplished in 10 minutes with a caliper, a plier, and a bench grinder.....The damper
shown in the pic top left has been shaved down, and now sits level with the cylinder top surface.....The OEM dampers
measure from .225 when new, to about .200 after being used...... Whether you're using new dampers, or re-using your
old ones..........
......Secure the damper in a pliers, and take it lightly to the side of a grinding wheel.... It's fast work.....
Take them down to about .160 to .170 thick, grinding the top of the damper (which is marked "up").....
Now the head will sit flush on the cylinder......This is recommended when using any type of high-perf
1-piece gasket, whether it is copper or a compound type like the ones we usually use....
Standard procedure requires filling the o-ring channel with silicone sealer......
A smear of silicone seal across the top of the modified dampers also helps keep them situated.....
Don't forget to re-torque the head to specs after its first heating and cool-down cycle....
This should be done several times with a copper gasket......
